Inserting Art (or your passion) Into Your Career

I’ve always had a desire to create and from a young age and enjoyed participating in art contests and creative events. I even had an opportunity to draw/create a logo for my softball team in Elementary School. As I matured, I always kept an art element in my life. I never had any formal art training but I would paint, create, teach, sell some of my artwork, collaborate and write as well. Another passion of mine . . .

from a young age was the desire to serve my community and to enter into a law enforcement career which I did for most of my life.

Throughout my law enforcement career, both as a sworn officer and later after we returned from living overseas, non-sworn personnel, opportunities to insert art into my law enforcement career would present themselves. For example, one of my Lieutenants asked if I’d face paint for a community event. I had never done so but thought I’d give it a try. What a fun gig. I did that for many years after. I’ve continued face painting for family and friends parties and other events. I was also asked to design a logo for a couple of new Sheriff substations. It was fun to be a part of Sheriff history in a small way. The logo is used on materials and challenge coins to this date.

About a year ago, I left law enforcement (still with the County) and joined the Public Affairs team for a major local Airport. I really enjoy the good work and the fun elements of my position. My position consists of a lot of creativity and I’m so grateful. From offering creative ideas, event planning, designing of flyers and graphics, etc. I’m able to use my creative abilities even more often.

Whatever your passion, I encourage you, look for those opportunities to share your gifts, passion, heart and abilities. Aren’t we the happiest when we are using our abilities? Don’t we find the most joy when we are doing what we love? These things require some bravery to step out into new roles. I want to encourage you in 2019, keep learning, trying and moving. You never know where you’ll land.

Warmest creative wishes,

Daughter, Wife, Mother, Friend, artist, vintage loving, law enforcement officer, Southern Californian, God and country loving girl who loves to meet like minded creative people, share life with new and old friends. Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better. ~André Gide

You were truly born with a gift!
I have the pleasure of acting as co-art docent for Nolan’s class for the past 3 years and will begin doing Ben’s class soon. We just did a lesson yesterday on Frida Kahlo. I love watching these kids be creative and surprise themselves with what they can accomplish!
