Martial Arts – Yes Arts

A few months back, a friend and I had a conversation about breast cancer and then kickboxing.  This friend owns multiple martial arts studios.  I shared with him that I’ve always wanted to give kick boxing a try.  Lo and behold, about a week later I had a pair of pink boxing gloves on my desk with a gift certificate to try out kick boxing.  Well, I fell in love with kickboxing and martial arts.  I attend United Studios of Self Defense (USSD) Mission Viejo North.  I had never been exposed to martial arts (except in the police academy when we were given one weaponless defense course).

The Sensei’s (instructors) have been amazing and so supportive.  They tailor things to your goals (weight loss, strengthening, self-defense, etc.).  While I started going for the exercise, I really enjoy the rank structure and being able to use what you learn. I’m hooked.  The community at our Dojo (studio) is warm and connected.  It’s a family from all walks of life and from all ages!  So awesome.  Each class (individual or group), you come away with something you can use!

It’s a different type of art but art nonetheless.  It’s relaxing, it’s beautiful (often looks like a dance), fun and an amazing exercise.

Since beginning, I’ve had the opportunity to test for my yellow belt, now working on my orange.  I’m excited to move forward and continue to learn.  I know that kickboxing and karate have most likely saved my life . . . I had high blood pressure prior to beginning, I’m losing weight, sleep better, feel more confident, enjoy the community, and have an overall outlook that has improved and is healthier.  I’m grateful.  While I can’t do everything the 17 year standing next to me can do, the Sensei’s modify some exercises that are more beneficial for my age, body and past injuries but still have maximum impact.

I’m excited to share with you my new Gi (pronounced Gee); the uniform we wear.  I had some favorite Brave Girl patches put on my uniform to remind me . . . that I can do it!  I’m a Brave Girl after all.  To get your own patches you can find them HERE.  I’m thrilled I found Kempo Karate and new friends.  So awesome! If you’re local and interested in trying it out, feel free to contact Matt and tell him I sent you!  They offer an amazing 30 day try for a very nominal fee.  It’s a blast.

It’s so important to find an exercise you enjoy!  So no matter what physical goals you have for 2017,  I encourage you to find something that makes you smile!

Warmest wishes and as we say in Karate or kickboxing class . . . Kiai!
